Our first MTD quarter, and what I'd do differently
An honest look at what went right, what went wrong, and what we are changing before November
Hi there,
Our first quarter under Making Tax Digital is behind us. Every client got filed on time. But I won't pretend it was smooth, and I think you'll get more out of this email if I'm straight with you about what actually happened.
The short version: things were quiet for weeks, then everything landed at once in the final stretch. Client data, new registrations, and software teething problems all hit in the same short window. Our team pushed through it, but it was tighter than it should have been.
The biggest lesson wasn't really about tax at all. It was about timing. The clients who sent us their numbers early had a calm quarter. The clients who waited until the last few days made everything harder, for them and for us. That gap is only going to matter more as MTD beds in.
A few practical things came out of it that I think are worth passing on, whether you file with us or on your own. Get into the habit of sending data monthly rather than saving it up. If you're still mixing business expenses through a personal account, this is the quarter to stop. And if your accountant asks you something, answer quickly. Under the old annual system a slow reply cost a few days. Under quarterly filing it can cost you the whole window.
On our end, we're not waiting until the next deadline to find out if we've fixed things. Our team is calling clients at the start of each quarter now, not the end, and we're setting a real cutoff date so a late submission moves to the next quarter instead of turning into a scramble.
If you want the full picture, including exactly what went wrong platform by platform and what we're changing before November, we've written it all up on the blog.
